Living in Allen | Mckinney

When they say DFW is one of the biggest metroplexes in the country, they mean it, especially when we’re talking about these two cities that might be closer to Oklahoma than Dallas itself. Allen and McKinney are the two farthest and most popular north cities within DFW due to its fast growing areas! However, don’t believe anyone that says they’re from Dallas, but they’re really from an hour and a half out in McKinney.

Allen comes with the convenience of the quietness of the burb lifestyle you might be looking for mixed with plenty of shopping areas to explore and spend your weekends in. It might be the only suburb that has over five shopping areas and entertainment hubs in it, including Allen Outlets, Watters Creek, The HUB, and the Villages of Allen just to name a few. The city itself also has over 50+ miles of trails for outdoor enthusiasts.

This could be an unpopular opinion, but McKinney might just have the cutest, Hallmark downtown area across DFW with its historic square, cafes, boutique shopping, and the weekend farmers market. There are limited options in the square in terms of living, but the apartments you’ll find here are completely worth the walkability you’re getting.

The rest of McKinney is found near 380, a very loved and a very hated highway due to how busy and congested it can get. In the same breath, 380 might be the best place to live if you love to have everything you need in one place. You’ve got every grocery store you can think of from Target, Kroger, Costco, Whole Foods, and H-E-B just a 5 minute drive off the highway, to hundreds of restaurants from your favorite chains to the newest place you’re seeing go viral on social media. Since 380 is such a rapidly growing strip, there’s always new places popping up, including new mid-rise apartments with great specials and affordable rates.

Although 20+ miles from the city, there are tons of options for renters here, including apartment-style living and townhomes. You have easy access to Frisco and Prosper from here if you’re looking to avoid the highway, and quick tollway commuting is more your vibe. Both cities are always growing, so don’t be surprised if your new next-door neighbor is the newest entertainment hub, walking trail, or concert venue. These cities do in fact sleep, but if you love quiet nights and the beauty of suburb living, then far north DFW might be for you!
