Living in The Loop

The Loop is Chicago’s downtown core packed with skyscrapers, public transportation, and people in suits taking their lunch break all at the same time. It’s super transit-friendly and packed with iconic spots like Millennium Park, The Art Institute, and easy access to the Riverwalk. You’re right in the middle of the action, but the area tends to clear out after work hours and can feel more business district than neighborhood. Budget-wise, the Loop is generally more affordable compared to other downtown areas, with a few exceptions for newer luxury buildings. Most apartments are in older high-rises with fewer amenities, but since you are close to so much public transportation, it’s super easy to get around to other neighborhoods. Millennium Park is a major perk, they have a ton of free movies and concerts in the summer and ice skating in the winter. You’re walking distance to a ton downtown, just don’t expect quiet streets or a cute neighborhood vibe. The Loop is all business during the day, and surprisingly chill after dark.

In addition, a little east of The Loop you will find a pocket of greenery and a bunch of high rises. This area is called Lakeshore East. There are a few buildings over here, most of them being condos, however you can rent those or the professionally managed buildings. Price wise, it really ranges, you can find more high end apartments with a ton of amenities, or get a decently priced studio or one bedroom on a good day. This area is home to a beautiful park, dog park, a Mariano’s for super convenient grocery shopping, a nail salon, and coffee shop. It is like a little cul de sac neighborhood that has everything you need, and it’s close to the Lake, River and easy access to the L.
