South Austin
Perfect for
Living in South Austin
South Austin is where the city’s eclectic, funky roots shine the brightest. It encompasses most everything south of the river and before Kyle/Buda. Known for its quirky charm, local businesses, and slower pace, South Austin offers a little bit of everything: walkable strips with dining, drinking, and shopping; peaceful trails around Barton Creek, and dense residential neighborhoods with a mix of apartments and homes. South Austin is home to the trifecta of Austin walkable strips, all parallel to each other: South Congress, South First, and South Lamar. Some of the most iconic Austin spots reside here—like The Broken Spoke, the Continental Club, Magnolia Cafe, Home Slice, and the Bat Bridge. And of course, right at the tip of South Austin lies the quintessential Austin watering holes, Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool.
Due to zoning laws, apartments on South Congress, South Lamar, or South First are far and few between, resulting in high pricing. Zoom out 1-2 miles though, and it’s apartment abundance at all kinds of price ranges. Depending on how far south you go and how old the apartment is, the cheaper it gets. Areas like Southpark Meadows or Westgate offer more space for a better value. No matter where you are, this side of town feels distinctly Austin—think live music, vintage shops, and taco trucks on every corner.
