RIVER NORTH CHICAGO

Like much of Chicago, this neighborhood has a very colorful history. It began as a manufacturing and warehouse area known as  “Smokey Hollow” due to the factories and forges in the area. In the 1970s,  Albert Friedman, a local developer, took on renovating and reinvigorating the area, which he re-branded as “River North.” Friedman offered low-cost space for rent to art galleries, ad agencies, and photographers, giving rise to the River North Gallery District. Today, this area boasts the largest concentration of art galleries in the U.S. outside of Manhattan.

TO DO IN RIVER NORTH

River North is a pedestrian paradise, with plenty of places to see (and be seen) well within walking distance. The Magnificent Mile offers plenty of options for shopping (and window shopping) while Hubbard Street plays host to plenty of chic bars and nightclubs.

Ward Park is the major green space here—this area stretches three acres along the Chicago River and includes an adjacent dog park for your furry friend to play around and socialize. For some more out-of-the-box sightseeing, check out what digital artwork is being projected on the façade of the Merchandise Mart through the Art on theMART installation.

Hungry? This neighborhood was home to Chicago’s Little Sicily around the turn of the 20th century, which led to its reputation as Chicago’s go-to place for authentic Italian food. Eataly—a food hall featuring a wide array of Italian restaurants, cafes, counters, and even a cooking school—has become a mainstay of the neighborhood.
