Whether they’re looking for a casual night out or trying to paint the town red, Houstonians can be found heading out to the bars every night of the week for a little stress relief in the form of perfectly poured cocktails or draught beer. Downtown Houston is one of the best neighborhoods to hunt down your perfect drink because the streets are lined with unique bars and restaurants, and it’s easily accessible from the surrounding neighborhoods. For some, the proximity of their apartment to popular watering holes is just as important as the amenities that the apartment offers. No matter your drink of choice, these are some of the best bars in Downtown Houston that we think you HAVE to try!

Captain Foxheart’s Bad News Bar & Spirit Lodge

This cocktail bar serves a variety of cocktails and spirits in a cozy setting with a speakeasy vibe. Located on the second floor, Bad News Bar offers a balcony with a beautiful view of Main Street, terrific service, and a solid whiskey selection. No need to head North to find an expertly crafted Old-Fashioned, either! This classic is served for only $5 during Happy Hour. If you prefer beer to cocktails, Bad News Bar also has a small menu of craft beer.

La Carafe

Praised as being the oldest bar in Houston, La Carafe sets the mood as “the local haunt” with dim lighting and candlelight. Unlike the previous bars on this list, La Carafe does not offer any cocktails or spirits. Instead, their focus is on a large selection of different wines and beers. Let the music from the juke box fill the air as you enjoy a quality drink and good conversation. When allowed, you can also head up to the second floor balcony for a great view of downtown. Keeping up with the historic vibe, this bar is cash-only (don’t worry–there’s an ATM on site).

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

If you’re a beer lover, this might be your new favorite hangout. Over 100 selections on tap, this is the beer mecca of downtown Houston. Flying Saucer offers a solid pub atmosphere. With a full menu available to patrons, you can enjoy your meal and a drink while watching a game on one of the handful of tvs and projection screens. While they do have sister locations, each Flying Saucer is a product of its community and no two are the same. Enjoy $1 off all draft beer during happy hour from 4-7 pm Monday-Friday!

Reserve 101

Opened less than a decade ago by a couple of whiskey aficionados, Reserve 101 offers 340+ whiskeys from 14 different countries. The atmosphere is edgy-but-friendly and drinks won’t break the bank unless you want to splurge on some of the rare offerings that are also available. If whiskey isn’t for you, Reserve 101 also offers craft cocktails, wine, and a selection of 40+ beers. Located right across the street from Houston’s House of Blues, this is a great spot to catch a drink both before and after a show!
