The Rise Of East Austin!
In a perfect world, we would all want to live in one of those expensive high-rises downtown. But the cool thing is, you can live just across 35, still be minutes from downtown and get to experience a totally different vibe. East Austin is a melting pot of all things Austin, past and present. It isn’t so much that the old East Austin was torn down, but that a fabulous collaboration between old and new turned into a really cool place to hang out and call home. If you’re looking for an Austin apartment next to some of the best-rated Mexican cuisine in the country, get a load of this neighborhood.
Forbes made a list of the Best Hipster Neighborhoods in America and East Austin was ranked number 7 on the list, beating out the Warehouse District in New Orleans and Capitol Hill in Seattle. Just a few notches behind Williamsburg, Brooklyn, East Austin takes the cake in bands you have probably never heard about and tattoos sleeves you envy. The list was compiled upon measurements of walkability, coffee shops per capita, food trucks, locally owned bars and restaurants, number and frequency of farmers markets, amongst other measurements.
First of all, can we talk about what a dreamboat that is to wake up, hop over to the farmers market and grab fresh ingredients for your breakfast? What a dynamite way to spend your Saturday morning. Add to the list of beautiful Saturday mornings the East Austin Handmade Arts Market. This monthly gathering of local artists is sure to make you feel all kinds of warm inside with locally made products and live music from local bands! Just about everything local that you can think of can be found at this thing.
It would be silly to not mention all of the food trucks that run this neighborhood. Head down to East 6th for trendy vibes and fried oreos, except these are better than the ones you see all of your Dallas friends brag about on social media during the State Fair. Fried and True fulfills all of your “will it fry?” inquiries and after a night at the bars on 6th it will literally feel like you stumbled into heaven. Plenty of food trucks park right outside of the bars and music venues you’ll be leaving at 2AM because boy oh boy do they know their audience. Anytime one of your out of town friends ask about where your favorite place to grab a taco or some hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint, something in East Austin will probably be on your list.
The perk of having an apartment in East Austin is you’re close to a bunch of everything. It isn’t uncommon to find an establishment where you can get some Mexican food, get your haircut, grab a vegan cupcake and buy a new outfit all in one place. East Austin threw a bunch of stuff into a pan and just fried it up into this artistic, trendy, high-end/cool old shit hybrid. People who call East Austin home are damn proud of that, and rightfully so.
