Summer is great for stacking your social calendar with events you might not hit other times of the year. New and exciting happenings are everywhere and people are stoked to be getting out of the house more. Now that the holiday weekend is over and you’ve had another weekend to recover, we’re here to give you a taste of what’s going on in the Houston area that you can hit up this weekend!
The Astros are playing the Minnesota Twins all weekend so you’ve got a chance Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to snag tickets to a ball game, and PIPPIN, a musical by Stephen Schwartz, is being performed at the Miller Outdoor Theatre all week long at 8:15 pm. You’ll only have one chance to attend some of the other local events going on around town this weekend though. Here’s a quick list of a few so you don’t miss out!
Thursday, July 13th
National French Fry Day at St Arnold Brewing Co
St. Arnold Brewing Company is best known for their adult beverages but this week they’re showing off their killer french fry game as well. This Thursday night, 6-8 pm, the brewery is offering their hand cut fries with a topping bar that includes chili, pulled pork, queso, habanero ketchup, and more! With a $25 ticket you get fries, beer, and a 23rd Anniversary pint glass.
Bayou City Poetry Group Slam
Stop on down to Indigo at Midtown for an all-out word brawl this Thursday hosted by Savannah Blue Arts & Outreach. Four teams of five poets each will face off during this group poetry slam. Grab tickets for only $12 in advance ($15 at the door) and revel in the creativity of the poets of the night. The show runs from 7:30-10:00 pm.
Friday, July 14th
Yoga at Contemporary Art Museum Houston
The only thing better than a yoga class is a free yoga class. We jump at any opportunity for a free yoga sesh because the hobby itself can break the bank so stop on by the Contemporary Art Museum Houston from 9:30-10:30 am this Friday to enjoy this breath-based flow class. Whether this is your first class or you’re an experienced yogi, all levels are welcome. The class is free but registration is requested because space is limited.
Nature of Ego & Self Beer Release Party
Southern Star Brewing Company is in the midst of an Art Can Series which features artwork from local artists for each beer release and this is the series’ fourth installment. Nature of Ego & Self Dark Ale is the featured beer being released Friday from 4-10 pm and Vincent Fink is the featured artist. For $12 you get a pint glass and three beer tickets plus the chance to enjoy Mr. Fink’s work as the brewery is transformed into a gallery of his paintings and drawings.
Saturday, July 15th
Flea by Night at Discovery Green
Stop by this flea market Saturday night from 6-10 pm for everything vintage and artsy. Get your fix of recycled and re-purposed items as well as local vendors set up shop in the southeast corner of Discovery Green park in Downtown Houston. The event doesn’t cost anything to attend but you might want to bring some spending cash because we can’t promise that you won’t find something amazing to take home with you.
Houston Roller Derby Double Header
This Saturday the Houston Roller Derby is hosting a double header between four local teams. Doors open at 6 pm with the first game beginning at 7 pm. Each game consists of two thirty-minute periods and tickets range from $15-$25. These girls kick some serious ass so these games will provide for some awesome Saturday entertainment.

Sunday, July 16th
Bitches Who Brunch at Prohibition Supperclub and Bar
This 21 and over brunch is designed to spice up your Sunday french toast and mimosa. Bitches Who Brunch is a pop-up burlesque show hosted at Prohibition Supperclub by The Moonlight Dolls. Enjoy music, comedy, and show-stopping burlesque as you dine. Tickets are $25 and seating is first come, first serve. Two shows are available to attend; the first show begins at 11 am and the second begins at 1:30 pm.
Rooney w/ Run River North and Camera Cult
The L.A.-based rock band, Rooney, takes the stage at White Oak Music Hall this Sunday at 7 pm. Run River North and Camera Cult will be opening this all-ages show before Rooney takes the stage. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 the day of the show. Stop on by and catch Rooney rock the house; fingers-crossed they play their latest release “Day 2 Day” and if you haven’t heard that tune yet, shame on you.
